Phone Expansion & Accessory FAQs

What is a phone expansion module?

A phone expansion module is an accessory that connects to a compatible desk phone and adds programmable keys. These keys can provide access to speed dials, extension monitoring, and other functions supported by the phone system.

Does an expansion module work as a separate phone?

No. The Snom D7C and Grandstream GXP2200 EXT operate through a compatible host phone. They add controls to that phone rather than functioning as independent calling devices.

What are BLF keys?

BLF stands for Busy Lamp Field. When supported and configured by the phone system, these keys use indicator lights to show the status of assigned extensions. Their exact behavior depends on the system configuration.

Are expansion modules compatible with every desk phone?

No. Expansion modules are designed for specific phone models. The D7C supports the Snom D735 and D785, while the GXP2200 EXT supports the Grandstream GXV3240, GXP2140, and GXP2170. VOIPX can confirm compatibility before adding equipment.

What is the difference between physical keys and programmable assignments?

A physical key is a button on the module. Page switching allows the same button to access different assignments. For example, the D7C has 16 physical keys across three pages, providing 48 programmable assignments.

What does an analog telephone adapter do?

An analog telephone adapter, or ATA, connects compatible analog equipment to an IP phone service. The HT801 provides one FXS port for an analog device and an Ethernet connection to the network.

Can the HT801 connect a fax machine to VoIP?

Yes, the HT801 supports T.38 Fax over IP for use with compatible fax equipment and service. Successful fax operation depends on the fax machine, network, provider support, and configuration.

Does adding an expansion module add more phone lines?

No. An expansion module adds programmable controls. It does not automatically increase your service’s phone numbers, SIP accounts, or simultaneous-call capacity.

Does VOIPX configure these accessories?

Yes. VOIPX helps confirm compatibility and configures supported accessories for your phone system, including extension monitoring, speed-dial assignments, and analog device connections.
