VoIP Desk Phone FAQs
What is a VoIP desk phone?
A VoIP desk phone is a physical business telephone that places and receives calls through an IP network instead of a traditional analog telephone line. It connects to a compatible phone service and provides a handset, speakerphone, and dedicated call controls.
What are programmable keys and BLF keys?
Programmable keys provide shortcuts to functions such as speed dialing or extension monitoring. BLF stands for Busy Lamp Field: an indicator that can show the status of another extension when supported and configured by the phone system.
What does Power over Ethernet mean?
Power over Ethernet, or PoE, supplies power and network connectivity through one Ethernet cable when the phone is connected to a compatible PoE switch or injector. Without PoE, the phone requires a compatible power adapter.
Can a desk phone connect over Wi-Fi?
Yes, if the model includes Wi-Fi or supports a compatible wireless adapter. The Snom D815 has integrated dual-band Wi-Fi. A phone connected wirelessly still needs a separate power source.
Can I connect my computer through the phone?
The models listed include dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, allowing a compatible wired setup in which the phone connects to the network and the computer connects through the phone’s PC port.
Can different employees use different phone models?
Yes. A business can use different compatible desk phones for different roles. Display size, shortcut keys, headset connections, and expansion options help determine which model fits each employee.
Does VOIPX configure the phones?
Yes. VOIPX configures desk phones around your phone system, including extensions and supported programmable functions, and helps with changes as your team’s needs evolve.
